The Chancellor case, RB exizines, came up in pretty much the same
.. Way With his first information received from the press. He said he made routine inquiry
of the FBI Liaison Agent to ascertain if an FBI investigation was being conducted. This
was So that it would not be necessary for him to request Civil Service Commission
investigation. On August 6, 196 5 asked to expedite clearance for
a nas who wanted to leave for Germany in his new capacity on-August-ll, 1965.
then called the FBI to inquire when the report would be made available to
the White House, and j absence of the regular Liaison Agent he was transferred
to Special Agen m He said ED ‘oi: him he had no knowledge
concerning the case but that if an investigation was being conducted the results would be
furnished to the White House. He said ND furnished him no information other
than this. Subsequently he contacted the regular Liaison Agent,
and learned that the report was being furnished to the White House.
a: wrote the White House requesting a copy of the FBI report so
that securi earance could be issued. He received a reply advising that because
this was a Presidential appointment ays this is not correct) the FBI report
was being retained at the White House. Because of the urgency and feeling it was
necessary to have a copy of the FBI report in order to issue clearance <i.
contacted an.effort to put pressure on the White House to obtain a copy. He
said, "I might have been pushy about this.'’ He also admitted that he might have told-=."}. “+
ub there was "some question" about the Chancellor case but was only referring to the
question of clearance.

offered to take me directly t for a confrontation as to the ~
ents which had been made. I tol I had no objection to his fully
alleged stat _
acquaintin as to my visit but felt it was better that he do this himself. He
agreed, an ed that he would definitely consul about the matter.
OBSERVATIONS:
GRD conatically denies the allegation. He offers plausible explanation
for his unusual interest in this case and it appears that he is technically correct about
the matter of clearances. He does admit being "wshy"'and might have said to Gig
that there was some "question" which could be misconstrued by Qj as referring
to suitability although intended to relate to procedural matters. ‘
