For the information of the Norfolk Office, prior to 1932,
all,coal mines in the state of Tllinois had closed shop contracts with
the™United Mine Workers, a labor organization of which subject LEWIS
is presently International President, and of which subjects KDPVUNDSON
and JAMES are President and Treasurer, respectively, of District lz,
which comprises the state of Illinois. In 1932 t rogressive
Mine Workers of America was formed in Iilinois, as a rival labor organiza-
tion for coal miners. The P.M.W. of A. was formed as a result of a
dispute between Illinois Coal miners and JOHN L. LEWIS over a proposed
wage reduction being sponsored by LEVIS. In 1932 almost all mines in
Illinois signed closed shop agreements with F.M.Re of Ae By 1937,
however, following serious rioting and domestic disturbances, a large
number of the revolting local unions had rejoined the _Uelt Re
