LEWIS, CIVIL RIGHTS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Reference is made to paragraph 3 of Burean lstter dated August 21, 1943 wherein it is set out that the Criminal Division has ~ advised that in 1932 injunction proceedings were instituted in the State Court in Springfield, Dllincis against LEWIS which resulted in an injunc- tion forbidding LEWIS from interfering with Progressive Mine Workers! activity in Dilinois, The Criminal Division requested a copy of these ~~ Proceedings be secured and forwarded to the Departaent. A careful search of the records of the Clerk of the Circnit Court, Sangamon County, Springfield, Illinois, failed to reveal any injunction proceedings wherein the Progressive Mine Workers of America and JOHN L. LEWIS were partiea to the action. A similar search of the records of the Federal District Court, Southern District, Southern Division of Dlinois, was negative. The records, however, of the Clerk of Circuit Court, Sangamon County, Springfield, Dlinois, under docket #52104, reflect that a bill of complaint was filed October 11, 1929 by Icx, et al, against JOHN L. LEWIS, et al. This was an action in cery requesting dumediate temporary injunction and permanent injunction by the officers officers of the International U..W. and individuals whom LEWIS had appointed to assume the various offices of District 12 in place of the elected offi- cers, HARRY FISHWICK being one of the elected officers. In this case JOSEPH AVSLONDRIGAN and FLOYD E-ATHOMPSON were the principal attorneys represen FISHWICK. The principal attorneys representing JOHN L. LEWIS were HENATSWARRUM, CHARLES K.NYEIRICH, MAPULVERMAN and GILLESPIE, BURKE, and GILLESPIE. eae The docket alone in this case consumed several pages and it is believed at this time too wluminous to quote. Numerons pleadings were filed including several] amended bills of complaint, several answers and amended answers, several cross bills, amended answers to cross bills and azended cross bills. From tine to time mumerous complainants and defendants wore added and subtracted from the suit. The suit was very active during the remainder of 1929 and 1930. On April 17, 19%) the Court ordered & citation for contempt against JOHN L. LEWIS and several others. Later in July the citation against most of the others for contempt was diamissed.
