At the above time eupervi scr of ny office contactedgiss Beahm
$;C Hallford, Springfield Office, and requested advice as to the Mies Gandy
present status of the case and the date of the initiation of the
investigation. In this connection he stated that the investigation had
already startec, in that inquiries and checks were being made to ascertain the
present location of the miners to be interviewed, and in addition other stepe
such 98 2 review of the newspaper morgue available in Springfield has gotten
underway in order to satisfy the Department's request for informationa to the
sentiments of the people and their reaction to the strike conditions during
the period under review. Mr. Hallford states that no publicity will result
from checking the newspaper morgue since the newspaper is not interested in
publicizing the case. Agent REP: este advice from SAC Hallford as
to his present estimate of the additional outside help he will need. He
etated that as pointed out previously, he will have four
Agente available and qualifi n the Springfield Office, and in addition he
believes that he will need at least twelve outside Agents who are axperienced
and qualified in order to hope to complete the investigation thoroughly, and |
also in order to complete it by the end of September so that it will be ready |
for presentation to the Grand Jury in accordance with the wishes of the
Attorney General.
SAC Hallford advised that present indications are that the actual v2
interviews will begin on Monday, August 23, and at the latest he would like
to have the additional outside agents available in Wp EVE Eye Office
R422 JAN 11 | 1962 It was pointed out to Sac Hall fora that e ry effort should be bent
toward expediting the investigation in the case in order that it. willbe '
completed by the end of September, Specifically, September 25, has been
indicated as the deadline for completing the investigation so that the —
Department will have some time to prepare the matter| for the Grand Jury in
October. He understands that and says that the matter is being pushed by
him in order to comply with the Bureau instructions.
