“a, eos Director =-2= — 9-6-4383 attorney in Springfield, who came to the United Mine Workers office and advised them that they should not mke a statement to the FBI unless he, FITZGERALD, was present at the interview, beoause they might incriminate themselves. Mr. PLOTCH stated that other persons were similarly advised but did not know specifically. Mr. FLOTCH was oocoperative and willing Mle Me ee ee Are woe Sear to mke any statement his attorney might permit. In view of the above attitude of the alleged spies of the U.M.W., these facts were telephonioally relayed to Mr. MUMFORD of the Bureau on September 6, 1943 and later discussed wit: @Qmmat the Bureau. It was pointed out that no interviews would be oanduocted with these alleged epies in the presence of their attorney unless the Bureau was specifically instructed to do so through the Department. However, it was pointed out to both Wake... & and Mr. MUMFORD that Agents of this office would con- tact each of the alleged spies personally to determine their attitude toward an interview and they would also be questioned specifically ae to what oocurred in the office of RAY EDMUNDSON on the morning of September 4, 1943. This letter will oonfirm the telephone conversation of and Mr. MUMFORD and the above investigative etep will be taken if each alleged spy of the U.M.W, but again it is stated no detailed interview will be had with any of these parsons unless they agree to be interviewed without the presence of an attorney. Very truly yours, t FRED HALLFORD, Special Agent in’ Charge. NJ FA:imj 44-18 Pera
