INTERVISVS WITH "Both the UMWA and the PMA unions got along with
and Mr, Ejshoff so far as I know. The theft of the
ballots on the wage scale was the reason for the
continued new Progressive union so far as I heard the men
.talking. I hod only been in the mine o little over
@ year and wisn't very interested in unions. My father and I worked to-
gether much of the time and miturelly we didn't talk about the union eitu-
ation very much. The Progrossive Union scamed airight to me and I was treated
the seme by both unions. I didn't attond very many meetings and never held
an offiec in either union.
"I didn't attend any mecting the night beforo the strike, but I
do reesll hearing sows of the mon say tht a few fellows were “on the carpet"
for being spies, I co ramanber that the dcy of the strike the men were
supposed to be londing small cers - I don't remember whother I loaded small
cars or not. TI didn't know anything cbout the strike until I waa ceile
to the surface. I dicn't stick around but drove hane almost at once. 1
took part in the pickuting about half of the time. I personally nevor sow
any force used or trouble et the mine during the picketing. I have no know-
ledge of any attempts to open the mine during the picketing. I don't know
enything about any ottempts to reopen the mine. Heard that they tried to
operate it but that thero wasn't enough of thom or sanething.
"I remonmbcr sipning petitions both for Progressives end later after
the mine reopened for the United Mine workors. I signed os I did not because
of fear or force but beccuse the general tlk each time was that most of the
men were going to vote Progrossive the first time ond UMWA the second tine.
"I voted in both of the NLRB eloctions and switched my vote. The
first time I voted for the Progressives and the second tine I voted for tha
United Mine Workers. I voted just the way I felt like. Wo one told me how
to vote or used any force against me. However, I heard othérs say men were
going around electioncering- these men were from both sides, Just like any
ordinary election.
"atter I started back at Mine B under the "open shop" I wasn't pay~
ing dues to anysne. ‘hon I rejoined coined up with the UMA because ny
father fevored that group and signed up befcre 1 did. I rejoined UMWA bo-
fore the elction. No manber of either unicn threntoned me to get me to join
their side.
"I havo read the ebove and it is true to the bost of my knowledge.”
