and they claimed they had 4 ma jority.
"I don't remember signing any other Fetitions during
the summer. It mide no difference to me which union
I joined. I wanted just to co with the majority of the men. I don't remember
anything unusual happening during the summer of 1937 up to the time of the
strike.
"TI was there when they tried to open the mine in Sept. 1937. TI
just went out and set on the encine and did no work. I don't know if anyone
went into the mine or not. JI hed been working all along up to this time_
the engineers don't go out on strike. Sonetime during the sit-down strike
the mine operators laid the encineers off because the mine had been shut
dovn so longe I never participated in the picketing at all_ JI was there in
my capacity es an engineer. After I was leid off I never went back to the
mine till it reopened for rood, The strike wos peaceful and I know of no
outside men being brought in by P.1.A. to help in the picketing. If any
drunks came cut the P.!.4. men took them awxy. i think the men were there
of their own free will. I heard one man say they were just protecting their
jobs.
"I think Elshoff wis appointed receiver over the Jefferson mine,
I understood thet some of the men from Nine "BY" went over there and did some
work I don't know why this wes done, I don't know how Ellshoff was able
to keep the mine closed for so long. I just heard some talk that he was
petting some money from Lewis,
"T heard of the first N.L.8.B. election but took no part in it.
“Then the mine opened the last time I received some notice that it
wis coing to open at that time I was working - = I told Faisetti
I would hive to give some notice. He told me that was alright to work
another shift and come back. When I went back I paid my dues to the Progressives
up until the time I saw it wis useless. They finally_ when ali the men were
sivning up, brought me an aprlication and told me I would have to sign up
acnin even though I had signed before. Some Italian fellow brought this
blenk to me at the mine_ I sicned it without being compelled because every-
one else wes going over. The men, I bk lieve, went over to UM. +. because
they felt it wis their only hore of keeping working. They knew that Elshof.
would refuse to do business with the Progressives and figure that was the
only way to keep the mine open. From the time we went back to work up
until the 2nd N.L.R.B. election I con't recall signing anything for either!
side except when I went over to U.N. I never even saw a fight during the
time from when we went back to work and the 2nd N.L.R.8. election.
"I voted in the 2nd N.L.R.R. election. Nobody forced to vote
in this election or how to vote. As far as I know the election was square.
