"I first joince a miner's union about = the United Mine Yorkers,
while I was working 2t the Peabody “inc #6 near Sherman, Illinois. I joined
this mines of my own frec will without any force or coercion, /.lthough I
have belonged to unions ever since I have nover held any officc in a union.
I was first employed at Mine "B" about QB and I worked there until 1938
Shortly aftcr the first N.L.R.B. election. I joined the Progressive !ine
“orkcrs union in 1932 when tho whole U.M,". local went over and formed the
P,M.A, I took no active part in the move. From 1932 to 1957 I am aware of
no unfriendly relstions between F.“.4,. local #54 and Carl Elshoff. During
this period I was entircly satisfied with local #54 and believed that it was
a good union. Insofar as I know all of the other miners in the union felt
the same way about it. There wis good attendance at the meetings and I
saw no force or intimidation and I never heard of any money being paid to
the union officials to got a job. During this period there was no strife
or friction botwcen the P.Nwi. and the U.M.0,. to amount to anything. After
the ine "B" was reopened as an open shop I cuit «ork on account of my
health and I have never gone back. Conscquently I »as not at the ‘inc during
the trouble between U,i. 7, and Peli.Aé
"T attended the meeting of Local #54 on May 11, 1937 when tho five
members were ousted on account of being spies for the U.M... as I remember
it was.a rcogularly called meeting and a big majority of the membership was
there, Several of the miners testified that these men head come to their
homes and had tricd to persutde them to go over and join the U.!... The
aceused mon denicd this but the membership voted to throw them out of the
2 union, I worked at the mino the next day, lay 12, 1937 but I did not observe
any of the negotiations or trouble. I worked all day and sent up full cars,
I cid not find out about the trouble until I came up. :
