I dont kmow or bother about such things I just attend to my own business. ~ “I did mot go to work the night of May 12, 1937, I went to the mine but soneone from the union called out to the ming and told us not to go down that they were on strike. the engineer tolc me we vere on strike he did not tell me Thy’. siulil dont why the strike etarted. 1 dont remember signing any petition for either Ush.. or PeieAe the surmer of 1937. I heerd thet summer that U.L.%. had formed a = local in Springfield but no one asked re +o join. I remember nothing of tote interest happening during the sumcer of 1537, When the Co, attempted to open the mine in Sept. 1937, I read it wae To opens Several of us went aut but did not go on the mine property. Tne sit-domn started either that sare dey or the next one. I used to go out once in @ while during the sit dom strike I eteved out there 5 or 6 days in all. I went out of my own free will when 1 did goe The F.)!.A. men vere there to nrotect the mines There were no outsiders there and everything was peaceful. 1 was not there when the marshall ceme. "I heard through the napere that they were going to open the mine on Deoe 13, 1937. I did not go out. *I voted in the firet N«L.F.B.e election, this was by secret bellot and I still do not eare to tell which way IT voted. I know PeiuAs won and feel this tasthhe way moet of the men felt. "I was not at the mine when they tried to open it in 1958 in Jee “ac far as I know the reason the mine wos closed so long was because Elehoff ‘wouldn't open it with e Progressive union and the men gaid that if he wouldn't open it as Progressive they rouldnt open it ot all. “I heard that Felsetti wae operating the Jefferson mine while ‘dine “BY was closed this was just talk so far es I kee. ““hen tha mine opened in 1939, I got o letter telling ma to cone beck within a certain no. of daygse I vent & saw Falsetti and he told me to coma to work that night. Nothing was said at thie time as to the wage scale. After the mine opened I continued to pay ry dues to Feiude I did not join UMW. till efter the 2nd election whea I turned over in order to keep my job. ~190~
