"On the merning of May 12, 1937 I went to work at Mine 'B! as
usual and went dowm into the mine at about 7:30 4.1. as was my usual
custom. when I went down into the mine that morning I knew that the PMA
Pit Committee had requested the Mine 'B! Conpany to discharge the miners
who had been expelled from PMA the night befor... JI also knew that there
had been a disagreement between the Pit Committee, our local wmion presi-
dent, and the coal company. ‘when I went to work that morning loading
coal I loaded short cars of coal throusnout the day because of the fact
that I was dissatisfied with the coa” concary. Iwas especially dis-
satisfied with the compzu.y because i. hec act immeciately cischarged
the men who were expelled from PMA. J+ wa3 my u-Jerstandirg that under
our contract ard extersions with the coal ccmpary that the company was
required to discharge members who had bee: cxpelled. JI was called out
of the mine approximai:.y une hour before quitting time by officials of my
union. ‘thereafter I was of course not employed at ifine 1B! as that mine
was shot down,
"T recall having signed several petitions for the PMA after
the mine was shut down. I never signed any petition for any other group.
Upon one occasion during the sumer of 1937 I recail having met one
at the Victorian Tavern on Gth and Jefferson Streets in
told me that RaY EDUUWLSON wanted to see me. IJ
replied t I did not want to see EDNNDSQN. I identify
Wa =: a miner who I last knew to be working at Peabody Coal Company,
Mine #57 at Springfield.
Yat the time of the Nataonal Labor Relations Board election
held at the Armory in Spri:gfield on December 15, 1937 to determine
the bargaining agent for Mine 'B!, I assisted in the election in the
following way. During the hours that the election booths were open I
stood by the ballot box and watched the voters put their ballots in the
box. I cannot recall having handled any of the ballots before they were
placed in the boxes. I recall during this election that
elas pe nanes of voters from a list. J also reca at on
a5 assigned the duty of seeing to it that voters
left the election hall by a different exit than the door through
which they entered. I do not recall any UM men working at the election.
I recall that a National Labor Relations Board Field Examiner by the
name o with another examiner, were in attendance all during
the election and the comting of the ballots. .
