"As District Board Member my duties were handling grievances
that eross between the members of the UM and the manage-
ments of the different mines within the jurisdiction of
the Board Member; also, internal grievances that arose from
the application of the Constitution of the United Mine Workers of America,
My duties also included organizing lool unions and installing officers of
whatever local unions might be sct up by the United Mine Workers of America,
"During the Spring of 1937 over a period cf several months I hed
several conversations concerning Mine “B", a coal mine located near
Springfield, Illinois, with RAY EDMUNDSON, who was Fresident of District 12,
UW. EDMIMDSOY stated during these conversations that he was very much
interested in eliminating the Progrersive ‘‘iners of Amcrica at this mine
and in bringing the miners employed therc into the UMW. EDMUNDSON stated
thet if the membership of Mine "B" could be won over, the strength of the
Protressive Mincrs of Amcrica in tho Springfield arca would collapse,
EDEUNDSON commentcd that this was one of the largest locals the Progressives
had in the Springfield oroa,
"During this period of several months in the Spring of 1957,
EDMUSDSOEN from timc to time introduccd me to various individuals at the
Wily Hoadquarters in Springfield. He stated these nen worked at Mine "B"
but were intcrested in becoming members of UMY. I reesll the following
persons ss being among these introduced to me by EDMUNDSON during this
period: FaAasNK AUSTIN, HeTE CARTUR, DOMINIC FASQUALE and PAS"UALE's son,
‘COTTON! ANANTAS, JALTS FALE, TONY FLOTCH, ANDRE SKRLEVICUS, EMORY
JACA AY, GLORGE JACH AY, and JOE ALBAYESE - clso known as SAM CATALONE.
iy conversations with these men during that pcriod revealed tmt they were
attempting to induce other emrloyces of Iino "B" to desire affiliations with
the Uli. I do not kmow whether thes¢ men were being paid for their work on
behalf of UMW st that time.
"I recall that my conversations with EDMUNDSON alia also my contacts
with these men, all of which IJ have rclsted above, oecurred prior to a
strike at Mine "B"™ on May 12, 1937. I also recall that during the several
months prior to this strike I frequently saw CARL H. ELSHOFF at UM. Head-
quarters and on numerous occasions I saw him entcring or loaving RAY EDMUNDSON's
office,
*s short time subsequent to the strike at Mine "B", EDMUNDSON
instructcd me to attend a mecting with the men I have mentioned above,
which meeting was held in a vacant room next-door to Scotty's Tavern, which
v28s located at the corner of 18th and Adams Streets in Springfield, I cannot
place the date of this mceting dofinitely but I know that it took place in
the Summer of 1937 and was not more than a fev weeks after the strike. As
nearly as I can reeall a11 the men whom I have listed above attended this
meeting, and CHARLES "BOLING GREEN! BONANNON, a Mine "B"™ employee was also
