Mr. LEDI.UL advised that under the laws of the State of Tilinois
a mins is required to have a mine examiner examine the mine daily before the
men arc permitted to enter the mine, This is done, therefore, at night,
usually after midnight. The person making his inspection must be cert- -
ified by the State as a mine examiner. He further advised that a company r
vould be permitted to make such examinations during the daytime, and if

2 licensed mine examiner, although they usually were, due to the fact
that the unions required thc same wage seale as if he were certified.
Mr. '®DILL stated that in the Southern Tllinois fields, where the
mines were gaseous, the miaus often employed examiners in the daytime
to check on air conditions at the fringes, and in the new workings,
and so forth, He advised, however, that in the fields surrounding
Springficld, there is no necessity of this as these mines are usually
considercd non-gascous.
Mr. MEDILL stated also that the reeords of his office rdlect-
