he: JOHN L. LEwIS, ETAL. aan rinefield, Tilinois \ > was interviewed at his home by Special Agents and He is 2 QJctursiiced citizen of the United States and speaks English well but it is not believed he would make ea good witness due to his lack of knowledge of the occurrences eat Kine "B" incident to this case, inasmuch as he was not present at the mine during the controversial period. He was cooperative and submitted the following signed statement: "Springfield, Til. September 9, 1943 ke the following voluntary who are Special Agents of No threats or promises have been made to statement the Federal Bureau o vestigation. get me to make a statement. "T was born in I came to U.S. i ce: 2 naturalizeo citizen of U. 5. "J began working at Old North Mine near Springfield, T11. in | joined U.M.w. in GZ I have never held an office in any union. tas far as I know, relations were good at Mine ‘B! prior to the formation of P.M.A. It was my understanding that LEVIS had bargained for a lowe, wage scale and the miners voted for an increase and then the baelicts were stole... This caused the men to form a new union celled P.}.A. Mine 'Bt was idle at that tire and kr. ELSHOFF signed an agreement with P.k.4. so he could open the mine. I had joined P.M.A. because the majority of the men changed over from U.K.u. to P.W.A. and I could go back to work. NT know of no strikes or closed doors or any attempts by ELSHOFF or the Kine officiais to discredit P.u.A. or show any partiality toward U-E.W. "T thought the officers of P.L.A. were honest and did a good job. I had no difficulty while I was a member of P.M.A. while I worked at Mine ‘B’. No one attempted to get me to join U.N.W. at that time and I did not know of any spies at Mine ‘B!. 25 SE a a
