Re: JOHN L. LEWIS, ET AL 8. on Septemb eaten by the UL§M prior to leaving Mine “B", anc is anti-Uhw. Prom interview, it was the agents' impression he is of questionable reliability. He executed the following statement: "Springfield, Illinois Ment ente. FH THAT OGpPvrsmoer av, sku make the following voluntary state- whom I know to be Special Agents "The first mine union I joined was the United Mine Workers of America which will be referred to hereinafter as the UM. I joined this union about I worked in some nine or ten mines before I started working ine I worked in all of these mines as a member of UM. "T have never held an office in'a union office. However, I was @ check weighman at Mine B. fro til January, 1940, "] joined the Progressive Kine Workers of America, which will be referred to hereinafter as the PMA, following the action taken by the other miners at mine B in September, 1932, I took no active part in the formation of FMA. thas far as I know the relations between Carl Elehoff and the UMW prior to 1962 were satisfactory. "T believe it was in 1936 when Carl Elshoff was reported to be interested in the operation of the Jefferson Mine at Spri.gfield, Illinois. At this time I recall that Falcetti, under Elshoff's orders took eight or ten men from Mire B out to the Jefferson lline and worked them out there. I also recall that the Jefferson ‘ine at that time was operating under an open shop and it later appeared that other men who were UMV members were brought to Mine B to work when that mine opened under the open shop in Fovember, 1939. It appeare possible that the eight or ten men put in the Jefferson Mine were URW agitators. I think that therefore from the start there was some working agreement between Elshoff and the UM7 to have a UMW = 103 +
