Re: JOHN L. LEWIS, ET AL.
EiToRVvitd WITH ever said anything to me about wanting to get P.W.a.
out at Mine B and getting U.u.W. back. I heard that
ontinue the wnion officials had some trouble with Elshoff
over the contract and his wanting to get U.M.‘/. back.
Before 1937 the P.U.a. seemed to get along OK with their own officials.
Fila. did net seem to have any more trouble with crooked leaders than
any other union, there are always some men in every union trying to get some-
thing out of it. JI heard at this time there were some men in P.MsAe
carrying stories to the Bosses about vhat happened in the union. I
did not go to P.U.a. meetings because I lived out in the country and
wider the agreement did not have to. I would attend election meetings
and that was about all, There was n¢éver any question in my mind as to
the dealings of Pidia. officials with union money, asscssments in P.M.A.
were about the same as in any wion. From 1932 to 3927 I don't recall
the U.Mi. ever picketing at Mine '3' nor do I remember any U.N.
Literature being distributed at the mine. I don't know whethcr there
were any men in the P.M.a. trying to organize for the U.u.W. Before
the mine closed I heard some P.M.a. board rembers say they did not want
the rire to close. There werc 12 men in the P.N.a. before the mne
closec organizing for the U.if.w. they nevcr asked me to join over
but I heard of their activitics, { don't recall their names now. I
never knew about Elshoff giving any parties for U.N. officials or
they for him.
“J remember hearing about the contract running out in the
Spring of 1937. I heard they had a temporary agreement, but never
heard anything about back pay. JI was satisfied with the way our union
officials were handling tais mattcr. The miners were mad about there
beins no cortract but there were no fights or other trouble, J never
heard anything about what the Co. had to say about the wage contract.
"I did not go to any meeting the night before the mine shut
down. J heard about it and about some U.N... men being chased out of
the union. I worked on May 12, 1937, I did not know anything about the
fact that there would be a strike on that day, J worked’all day and
found out when I came up on top that the mine was shut dowm, J heard.
the minc was closed because Elshoff wanted the P.u..i. men to join
Ueles but they would not do that so they closed it down. I heard of
cars being loaded short the dy the mine closed dorm, but I did not do
this myself.
"T did not sign-any petitions for either P.ti.oe, or Uli.
the summer the mince closed down.
"Tl. know nothing about the U.M... forming a new local the
summer of 1937. ,
