RE: JOHN L. LEWIS, BT AL INTERVIEN WITH 8 sront (MBean special Arent (TS . JOHN W. DOHERTY elites interviewed JORY W. DOHERTY, o Anois on September 14, 1943. BO S Btate 3126. This interview was conducted in accordance with a request from the Department set out in Bureau letter dated Angust 23, 1943. This request asked that it be as- certained what relationship existed between DOHERTY and EDMUNDSON, and as to whether DOHERTY was aware of EDMUNDSON's attitude at the time DOHERTY eug~ gested to BAJORK that EDMUNDSON was perhaps willing to reiterate a previous offer to operate Mine "B". This was set out in « memorandum written on Os- tober 6, 1937 by LEONARD BAJORE, On interview, DOHERTY advised that from 1933 to 1936 he was an wns | itor with the United Mine Workers. His job consisted of auditing the warious Jocal union records throughout the State of Illinoiss that he worked for UMW during the SNEED and into the EDMUNDSON administration. In 1936 he went to 6t. Louis, Missouri, where he remained until 1940 for the purpose of directing the organization of the United Steel Workers of America under CIO in that area. DOHERTY met LEONARD C. BAJORK in 8. Louis when PAJORE was Regional Director of NLRB at Bt. Louis. Concerning BAJORK's memorandum to the effect that DCHERTY Hed suggested to BAJORK that RAY BDMUNDSON of the United Mine Workers was perhaps willing to reiterate his previous offer to operate Mine "B" . DOHERTY stated as follows: In connection with DOHERTY's work for the United Steel Workers he hed come to kmow BAJORK well, and had found him to be of great assistance, Thereafter, upon an occasion when he met EDMUNDSON, date and place not recalled by DOHERTY, he learned that EDMUNDSON did not know BAJORK. He, therefore, suggested to EDMUNDSON that he should meet BAJORE and become well acquainted with him, and thus he would be able to go to BAJORK when it was necessary to find out what could and could not be done in comeo- tion with union matters. DOHERTY advised that no doubt as the result of this suggestion and some conversation with EDMUNDSON that the memorandum referred to above was written by BAJORE. DOHERTY stated that especially since he was located in 8t, Louis { during the pertinent period herein involved he had never talked with EDMUNDSON. fsa matter of fact, he had little opportunity to telk with EDMUNDSON in con- | nection with instant matter, and that at any event EDMUNDSON had never fur- nished him with any information concerning activities at Mine *B", He did kniow that EDMUNDSON was particularly ective and particularly anxious to or genize Mine "B" DMN, but EDMUNDSON had never given him any information as to . DOHERTY stated that he ia personally acquainted with JOHN L. LEWIS, but thet LEVIS had never talked with him concerning Mine “B" or Mine “A® problems, and thet ae a matter of fact LEVIS wap not likely to have done. so > = §83 -
