Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Hauk advised that they would be un- able to give a definite answer to Mrs _ Schweinhaut on the problem inasmich as ohn L. Lewis was cat of town and would not return untii Thursday; Lowever, they i indicated that their opinion would be that persission would not | not be given for an exaaination of the booke ant records by the FBI. this conference, Agent of course, took po part in the request for a voluntary consent to records of the (MW but only assisted Mr. Schweinhaut in specifically advis ing as to the scope of Vag iivesti gation or vie thn SOAS USE LS Us Mr. Scinreinhaut advised after this conference that the Byreau should withhold the beginning of any accounting investi gation on in vi ew of the very strong ; possibility that the UMW was not going to allow a voluntary examination of the records and stated that the Bureau would be advised in the near future whetber or not this phase of the investigation should be undertaken. Mr. Schweinhaut observed that in the event the UMW did not give permission to examine its records, the Departae grand jury at the present tine or it might subpoena the required records be rand Jury. a a “that if this were done the he nepartaent would probably sbably ve the records in Washington subpoenaed before the Federal grand jury at Washington, D. C., where they would be impounded by the court and sent to Springfield, Dilincis, for examination.
