At 3:05 p.m., 6/29/63, Assistant Director Courtney A, Evans
advised SA David Ryan, Weekend Supervisor, Domestic Intelligence
Division, that the Attorney General had made inquiry regarding an
article appearing in the “New York Journal American" regarding this
case, Mr. Evans stated the article indicated a “high elected American
official" was involved with this scandal, The Attorney General stated
the President had expressed concern regarding this matter,
SA Michael OtRourke, Weekend Supervisor, New York Office,
telephonically advised this newspaper article was entitled "High U. 8S.
Aide Implicated in V-Girl Scandal" and contained the by-line of
James D, Horan and Dom Frasca, The article purported to be the result
of a 20 minute trans-Atlantic taped interview between the newspapermen
and Maria Novotny and her spokesman British newspaperman Peter Fark,
The article stated "One of the highest names in American
politics, a holder of a very high elective office, has been injected
into Britain's vice~security scandal," The article stated Novotny
identified one Suzy Chang as the former paramour of this American
official,
After giving a rehash of the background of this case, the
article appeared to conclude that it was “apparent that Chang, Novotny
and Keeler were linked in a web of international vice activity,"
This information was telephonically furnished to Mr, Evans
and he instructed that New York should make no inquiries at the
“Journal American” regarding this article but that such inquiries
would be handled through Mr, DeLoach, New York was advised aAtoordingly.
