Eyes of U.S. Were Upon n Ward
London, June 10 (Special)—U. §. authorities for dd ‘had been shadowing Dr.
Stephen Ward as a Communist suspect who they thought was meeting too many Ameri-
cans—and they played a big part in unmasking him as a vice ring operator, sources |
said today.
The U. 8. officials aiso aided
Scotland Yard in pressing its in-
vestigation of whether the call
girl ring Ward has been accused
of running from his plush Lon-
don home was only part of a
bigger setup with American rami-
fications, the sources added.
The American officials already
had established that Ward did
not like Americans and that he
lost no opportunity to say deroga-
ry things about them.
Favors Ties With East
Though here never haa been
ny decisive evidence that Wacd
13 or was a Communist, there
was evidence that he was well
disposed toward the Russians and
frequently said that Britain
should look to the East and not
to the West for peace and pros-
perity.
Among the revelations linking
‘the London vice operation with
America was the discovery that
one call girl operating from a
Chelsea apartment here was a
Chinese-Ameri¢an named Susy,
who was mixed up in the Harry
Alan Towers case in New York
in May, 1961.
Towers, then 40, a suave Lon-
don TY producer, was charged
with importing stunning blonde
Maria Novotny, then 19, into the
ALY Ua
U.S. for the purpose of prosti-'
tution and with living off her
earnings as a call girl, —
He Filed to Russia |
Towers jumped bail and fled to
Russia ,;where he was subsequent. |
ly spotted in Moscow and Rostov, |
When last seen by an Englishman
in Russia, Towers said he intend-
‘ed to go to Peking. That was the
last heard from him.
Maria skipped probation a
returned to London. |
Federal prosecutors said at t
time that Towers had brought H
number of girls into the U. }
since 1959 for immoral purposes.
