Chicago File 55-194 Jcw/JEH :mel On October 10, 1947 Mre CHARLES SIGNA, Owmer of the Top of the Town_Tavern — 3058 Peterson Avenue, Chica,zo, Illinois, was interviewed by ane - At the time of this interview Mr. SIGNA advised that:he . put up £5000 toward the bond of CHARLES GICE in 1943. He stated.that the ae, of x #5000 put up by him was money that had been turned over to him by CHARLES GIOE — for this purpose. He states that GIOH gave him tne money in cashy and that hey ‘+ went to a vank, believed to be the Northwest National Bank, and purchased a certified check which he deposited with Attorney JOE BULGER to be used on an etyeis bond. Ne advised that at this time ne was operating a tavern at 1138 WE i= Gaya oe isd BY Veet Wo Se VoaYoe Wortn Clark Street, Chicayso, Jliinois, and tnat CHARLES CIOE came to him at the tavern and requested vhat he put up (:5000 toward his bond. Mr. SIGNA 7 eg states that he told GIO; that he had no such sum of money, and GIOE advised hin’ nel } that he didn't have to have the money, and thereupon turned over to him $5000 eo in cash to pe used for this purpose, which money GIO had on his person at that time. % 4 a = aoe _ as v “he qe advised that Attorney )JLSS8 uid not contact nim Jor this purpose, and that: he did not see EULGO2 unvil after he nad put up the money; that sometime later tne Treasury Department agents cnecwai his income ayjainst his expenditures, which check snowea what he did nov have #5v00 of his ovm for use as a bond; that he told the Treasury Department acents wiat had happened and then requested that he be released from nis responsicility on CI@=ts bond. He stated that he met with GIOB and AtLorne;y BULGER at Gibby's Restaurant, where the matter was discussed,’ | and it was decided that the money vould te returned to him and he would turr : it back over to GI3e. He stated that Attorney JC“ BULGER gave hima certified Oe check for tne 5090, which checs he casned, and retumed the cash to GIOE. tee:4.7 He does not recall just wiere he received the check in repayment of the money,’ ’ but believes tuat it was possibly at Attorney RULGER's office.
