A book has appeared recently, A Man Called Inteepid by William Stevenson, dealing ete with operations of British Intelligence in the United States during World War II, especially in the period be fore Pearl Habbor, including the cooperation extended to it by the FBI. The book . makes some rather startling claims about the exploits of British .. Intelliggenee in the United States, which appear to me to be seriously 3 inflated. to say the least. ; There is almost nothing in the Roosevelt, files ‘at Hyde Park to substantiate the claims made in this book. The one agency that might have material in its files that would shed light on its claims . I telephoned Director Kelley's office and talked with a telling him my plight and asking whether I could not come down to Washington and talk vith someone in the Breau familiar with the relevant files who might be able ‘o answer my questions. He seemed to understand my problem and told m: to write to Director Kelley, which I promptly did. That was three weeks ago’ and I have heard n¢othing. My previous experience with the Bureau in trying to obtain material relating to what Roosevelt asked of the Bureau in regard to America First and what he obtained, was not encouraging in terms of the time it took and the material Finally provided.
