‘ n.., In Ju&/and July, 1944, Mrs. Ann H. P, Ken# (of 2112 Wyoming Ave.,
. “7 4H. W., Washington, D, C.), the mothar of Tyler Kent, sent a resume
. “~~ of her son's case to the delagates of both the Republican and Demo-
cratic Conventions, Upton Close, the radio commentator, Rave the Kent
Case nationwide publicity on several occasions. Newspapers featured it.
Millions of Americans became sensitized to the presence in the New Deal
closet of a Kent Case skeleton ranking in importance with the Pearl Har\\
bor sieleton. Then, on September 2, 1944, the State Department issusd a
lengthy defense of its surrender of young Kent to British authorities. (Vi
His, Kent's reply to Secretary Hull (a copy of which was sent to every
member of Congress) began as follows: "May I be permitted to say that
the long release by the State Department on September 2 relativa to Tyler '
Kent teft entirely unanswered the potnut on which the American people de-
wind an investigation; 1.6., the existence or non-existence of secret
pre-war agreemonts made by the President. of the United States without -
'the advice and consent of the Scnate'", . ."Very few people besides his .
mother are interosted in Tyler Kent per se, But ono hundred and thirty
odd million Americans are vitally concerned to know whether or not it
is true that in time of peace, one year beforo the Lend Lease Bill and
other measures wore put before the Senate, they had been planned ‘betweon
‘the Amrican Frosident and the British Navy head'." On September 5, 1944
ex-Ambassador Joseph P, Kennody also went to bat for tho New Deal.
Kennedy admitted, howevor, that copies of 1500 cablegrams had been found
in Tylor Kent's room, but did not acknowledge the nature of the cable-
grams, News of.the Kennedy statoment reached Kent in prison and the
British Authoritics pormitted him to wire his mothsr on September 14,
1944: " Kennedy's. statement false,"
Ths latest chapter in this fantastic case occurred September 26,
34 1944. On that date the Washington, D. C. TIMES-HERALD headlined:
—~ * "British Free Ramsay, Tyler Kent's Friend." With adequate pres-
sure from beck-home constituents upon Congressmen, the Kent Case seems
Sure .to boil over as goon as Congress reconvenss. Why should an American
citizen whose forebears fought in every American war be imprisoned sbroad
in outright denial of his diplomtic rights, whan even his Parliamentary .
friend has been released? / ot
