Dear Sir; Re: Frank Nash, with eifaces, I. Oc mo
1166. Eecaped ¥éderal Prisoner. ~~
Chicago File 76-115. ae
’ Please be advised that upon receipt of authorization .
fran Mr. Hughes of the Bureau, this office placed a tap on telephone
Ardmore 0851, located at 4870 Winthrop Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, at
which address friends of Harvey Bailey, recent escape from the Kanses
State Penitentiary, are reported to reside. Through this medium the
location of two other friends of Harvey*Bailey and Verne C. Miller,
_frequently mentioned in the Nash file, was obtained as telephone Nevada — -
Sll4, which is located at 4£01 West Van Buren Street, Chicago. The
parties located use the name of Catherine and Helen. drrangenents .
are being made to tap the above telephone today, with a view of obtein- | —
ing information from the frienis of Nash as to the location of Harvey ..
Bailey, if possible.
Bpecial Agent W. C. Ryan was assisted by Lew D.. Nichols
in tapping the above wire and obtaining the desired information. Mr.
Nichols is an applicant for position of Special ‘Agent, as noted in Chicago
File 67-057. He has cooperated loyally and, in my opinion, has rendered —
valuable services in locating various telephones for tapping purposes "
if necessary, Mr. Nichols has previously been engaged in such work with 4
the Secret Six and the Intelligence Unit of the Internal Revenue Bureau =:
in Chicago. He is now employed at night, working for the Unemployment - ve SS
Relief association at a meager salary of §20.00 per week, having been = =
released from his last position due to bad economic oméditions. In ny _
opinion, this office could make use of his services for the next thirty .
days on the Frank Nash case, accordingly permission is requested to em-
ploy him for a period of thirty days, if possible. JI am confident that
he .would be willing to wrk for this Bureau at $5.00 per day. Mr. Nichols
has not approached me in thie respect and the request for permission to
employ him is made of my own volition. ch . a .
