Special agent W. EZ. Miller then procesded te Dothan, Alabama, where be interviewed Mr, Clarence May. May at that time informed Mr, Miller that he would be in Birmingham, Alabama on Monday, July 24, 1953, and that he would cell at the Birmingham office to discuss the information thet he hed in hie possession, At the time Mr. Milier interviewed May in Dothan, and at the time May was interviewed by the writer in Birmingham, May eaid thet be, himself, ahortly after the War, when he was discharged from the Army, entered into the bootlegging and gambling business, in which . enterprises he wae engaged for a few years, after which he was a Deputy Sheriff in Dothan, Alabama, his brother being the Sheriff, Subsequoentiy he became a member of the former State Law Enforcement Bureau for the State of Alabama, and after that was an investigator for former Governor Bibb Graves, as well aa for the former Attorney General. ’ May added that because of his former connections as a bootlegger and gembler, and also because of his position as an officer, he became acquainted with a large:number of bootleggers and gamblers operating in Alabama, smongst whom waa Floyd Bruce. He mentioned particularly an in- etance when, at the request of the Governor, he was investigating Mr. Walter K. MeAdory, Chief of the Alabama Law Enforcement Bureau, during which tine “he contacted Floyd Bruce for information concerning MeAdory; that at that time, due to the assistance given him by Floyd Bruce, he in turn secured @ favor for the latter through the assistance of the Governor, with the re=- sult that he, May, and Floyd Bruce have since that time been good friends, May mentioned that he has seen nothing of Floyd Bruce in recent years, but that it ia hia opinion that this friendship still exists between himself and Floyd Bruce, especially because of the fact that a gambler nemed Thornton, when pausing through Dothan within the past year mentioned to May the fact - that Bruce had told him that May on one occasion hed befriended him, Thorn- ton at thet time, according to May, told him that Floyd Bruce wae opereting May eaid that in view of the fact that Floyd Bruce is operating out of St. Louis, Mo., as well as in view of the fact that Filcyd and his brother Ray Bruce on one occasion had kidnapped a United States{custan ; officer in Florida a few years ago, that it 1e his opinion that Bruce might be mixed up with the Kansas City affair, or that he possibly has secured information concerning that matter. May stated that he believed he could locate the Bruce brothers for questioning, but that it would mean that he, himself, would have to take a trip, possibly to St. louls, Mo., in omer to-locate these brothers an@d secure the desired information from then. During the interview with May, the latter mentioned that there perhaps waa no other person with the varied experience that he bas had, not only as a bootlegger and gambler, but also as a lew enforcement officer md investigator.
