On October #, 1918, his commanding officer, Colonel Frank
Mite, Infantry Division, R. R. end ©. officer, recomended qgubjeot Miller
for & caommission’as an officer, stating that, *I have imown Sergeant *
Miller during the past yeer,'ani for a considerable part of that time he
has been under my command. I have had opportunities to observe him ani
know him to be @ young man of most excellent character and relfebliity. .
He is forceful and energetic, and I believe has the material in him for —
the making of an excellent officer. I am glad to recommen! Sergeant
Miller, and believe that be will make good",
The files also contein an affidavit of BE. D. Treadway, _.
Clerk of Circuit Court, Beadle County, South Dakota, dated January 2B,
1923, which sets forth that Vernon C. Miller has been arrested, arraigned
and fe etending trial on a charge of having embezzled several thousand
_Gollars of public funde and money which came into his posseasiog whi
‘acting as Sheriff ‘of Beadle County; that it ts anticipated that the
a
defense of Miller will be that he is mentally deranged and therefore
incompetent due to having been wounded and gassed while in the mili{tary
service of the United States, and that he will claim to have received a
eertificate of discharge showing he was gassed and wounted, and has been
awarded a foreign decoration for bravery. The affidavit is acecmpanied
dy @ request made by 7, C. McCloy, States Attorney for Beadle County,
South Dekota, for a certified copy of the complete military record of
subject Miller in order to refute the evidence to be introduceé on behalf
of Miller, as det out above. There are also several letters in the file
received from Senator Norbeck pf South Dakota, requesting the eam j
information as that requested by Mr. McCloy, ; ie
The files also reflect the address of subject Mi Llier's
wife, Mrs. Mildped M. Miller, 1119 Kansas Street, Huron, South Dakota,
and there ia also a form letter reflecting that on April &, 1920, a pieee
of bagcage vas forwarded to subject Miller care of albert Miller, 4631
Malden Street, Chicago, Illinois.
