I called the Chicago office with reference to the article
appearing in the Waehiogton Ster of September 5, page A-5, quoting
an article in the Chicago Evening American of that date to the effect
that an unnamed prisoner in the county jail had informed Federal.
Operetors that Chicago gangsters bad marked Mrs. Frank*Maab for death,
and furniehing certain other informetion. Agent in Charge Purvis os
stated thet he knew to what prisoner this referred; that as a matter
of fect the Agente had been in contact with this prisoner who hed fur-
pished thie information to them, He was absolutely et sea, however,
as to bow the Chicago Evening American obtained the ‘information end
atated thet he would make immediate inquiries in thet connection. He

Purvis stated
that he felt thie prisoner was a source of good information, although,
of course, he was not placing complete reliance upon his statenente.
Incidentally Agent in Charge Purvis stated that Doc Stacey had waived
removal and the Marahal was planning to remove hin to Kansas City
shen he proceeded with other prisoners to Leavenvorth during this week.
Purvie stated thet po unusual steps hed been taken to transport Stacey
but that he would be along with six other prisoners with the usual
detail of Deputy Marshals. Purvie inquired as to whether we thought
; Agents should accompany then and + told hin by all weans I thought he
: should confer with the Marshal and arrenge to have very cereful thought
and attention given to the transporteticn of Stacey and thet he should
gend along at least two Agents properly equipped at the tine of the
I inquired of Purvie ae to the infornetion developed relative
to hie check of the records of the several gangsters whose criminal
records had been gent to him about two weeke ago by the Director. He ©
. etated that he had not completed hie inquiries; that he had developed
gome- information but was continuing with the investigation. I suggested
thet he send a night letter to the Director furnishing the information he
had already received in order that the Director would have that information
in the morning. He stated he would do 80.
