Directorm-4, - .
I do know that I worked night and dey a thie caso with the
Police Department, and, in fact, almost completely divorced myself fran ny
home, to do the best I possibly could, ani I am personally satisfied with the
results to date. I do know that at the time I aecured the information on
Walter HeGee, and returned him from Amrillo, everyone was profuse in their .
expressions of appreciation, including Mr, Reppert, who haé apparently now
euffered a change of beart. One newspaper of Kansas City took a photograph
of Mr. Reppert congratulating me on finding this wire, and while this photo-
grayh was not published in the newspaper, the photograph was taken at the
office of Mr. Higgins, It may be the photograph did not tum ot to be a good
one, but it was taken. . : .
Anyone of the Kensas City office ean vouch for my work on the
McElroy case, and when I mke this statement, I assure you I do not desire any
credit whatscover, I simply tried to do my duty, nothing more. JI went no
credit or praise, except ap it might revert to the Division proper, ani to
the Department of Justice, and to those in authority. :
When Judge McElroy returned frome visit back east, he told
mo he had seen the Director, and expressed hie appreciation to him for the
assistance of the Division.
Reverting back for the moment to my telephone call to Police
"headquarters the night of June 16th, for assistance at Union Station, I will
frankly admit that I am not positive at this moment to whom I conversed at
Police headquarters, in the Detective Bureau, on the assigument of men, but
ZI am as positive as I am that I am dictating this letter, that what I stated
above with respect to calling the Police Demrtiment, and getting the “hot
shot" cer in preference to a cruiser, is the absolute truth.
Y Reverting again to the Nash case, in which Mr. Reppert states
Chief of Detectives Higgins himself advised the Division of the identity of —
the two men, whose mames apparently were not mentioned by Mr. Reppert, please
be advised that I cannot discusa thie, because I do mt know to whom he refers.
I know that after we made our investigation on Miller, Chief Higgins and Mr.
Reppert both tald me that Miller and Vetes, alias Welsaman were mized up in
the shooting. To date we have not been able to identify any witneeses who
saw Weise, or Weissman, tut the Kansas City office is giving this mtter ap-
Tropriate attention in the course of their investigation.
I do know that in my presence, ani in the presence of Gus Jones,
and I betieve one other witness, in the office of Chief of Detectives Higgina
at Kansas City, Miseouri, Mr. Reppert steted thet the shooting at Kansas City
*ia your case, not ours”, and munifested no particular interest, thie in spite
of the fact that two of his own m@m had been kilied,
