MEMORANDUM.
Mr. Spear telephoned from Kanses City vith reference to
the¥cttnesses who rere to be taken to Leavenrorth for the purpose of
viewing Kelly, Bailey and Betes. -He stated that the Kansas City Journai-
Post carried an article todey to the effect that fourteen witnesses vere
going to vier the three above-named prisoners at Leaven-orth; thet the
nenes of these witnesses were not set out; end that Kelly, Balley and
Bates rere to be quizzed concerning the Kansas City massacre. Mr. Spear
advised that he contacted the Managing Editor of the Post, eat rhich time
he vas advised thet the Post had gone to press ten minutes before, carry-
ing this article, end that the information had been furnished to the
Post by a "red cap" at the Union Station. Mr. Spear stated that the
Kensas City Star cid not carry such an article.
I told Kr. Spear that in viev of the ebove all plens
should be cencelled, and that if insuiry vere made, he shoulc merely
etute that in viex of certein developments, the matter could not be
earried through. I instructed him to arrange to teke tro or three of
the witnesses to Leevenrorth et one time rether than take all at one
time, anc that the matter should be hendled secretly so that the nevs-
pepers vill never know when they are going.
