Ly. Hoover that Verne Liller had been seen and identified as being in Florida,
Ye steted thet he had received information from the Associated Press that
Killer had been at a tourist camp near Fonce de Leon, Florida, in the western
pert of the State. Ir. Alt said that in the ebsence of eny other agent, he had
sent Agent Nance over to investigate the report and in the meantime he had .
requested the Associated Press not to print any word of the story, which they
agreed to do. Agent Nance had telephoned ir. Alt and reported that Miller and
his wife had teen reported as being at a tourist camp about five miles west of
Fonce de Leon, operated by @ woman named Elsie Hopkins, This women claims to
have been telking with Miller for atout fifteen minutes on the 18th instant, when
he stopped there in a new Ford "8" with an inverted Fioride tag. She positively
identified hiller, unhesitetingly, when shown hie photograph, and she asserts
that she mew him back in the “old carnival days" and that he hed stopped to °
talk over old times, She also stated thet she is afraid of biller and knows
wnat he is. This woman stated to Nance that the police officers visited her
a short time efter Liller had been there end inquired about him, saving they.
were looking for him to which she replied, "Well he was just here, why didn't
you arrest him” }r. Alt stated that epparently the police officers were afraid
of hiller. Lire. Hopkins also stated that Miller had been frequenting a tourist
camp ebout ninety or a hundred miles west of Tallahassee, near a plece called
De Funiak Springs, which is situated about midway between Tallahassee and
Pensecola. Mr. Alt stated that agent Nance overheard a bootlegger tell the Sheriff
et Tallahassee that Miller had been picked up at St. Petersburgh last week and
wesreleesed, but Lr. Alt does not teke much stock in this as he states the St,
Fetersburgh police are very cooperative and they would have advised him in such
an event. Ir. Alt said that the police and sheriffs in the region about where
Taller is supposed to be are, however, Very uncooperative and are not to be trusted.
Lx. Hoover instructed tir. Alt to call in Agents Kingman and Shivers, to leave
OF Shivers in charge of the office and to take Agent Kingman and proceed to meet
Agent Mance et a place to be arranged with the latter. ix. Hoover inst:ucted
