MEMORANDUM! Acting Agent in Charge D. 0. Smith telephoned fron Chicago concerning the Verne“Miller case. With reference to his telephone call Saturday, he advised that Agent Madala and - his wife are occupying an apartment on the second floor of the apartment house in which they believe the Millers are located; and that telegrams and mail are being covered. Mr. Smith stated that Agent Notesteen of the St. Paul ™ Office knows Verne Miller personally; that they were both born and ~* reared in furon, South Dakota. Nr. Smith further stated that eae when Mr. Hanni was in Chicago Saturday he informed him that Mr. ae Notesteen would be available if needed in Chicago, and that he, oy - Mr. Smith, thinks that he is now needed. JI authorized Mr. Smith _ to call the St. Paul Office, reouesting that Mr. Notesteen proceed to Chicago at once, and stated I would confirm this by telegran. Mr. Snith also informed me that Mrs. Rogers, stenographer in the Chicazo Office, is frou Huron, South Dakota. He suggested that Urs. Rogers might go to the races,rith the idea in mind that Verne Niller would perhaps contact Bobby Moore and Vi Willer there. I told hin this would be all right. Mr. Smith also recuested authority to keep an automatic shot gun in the apartment, suggesting that it would be more effec- tive than a machine gun in the event they should be able to take Verne while proceeding down tbe hall to the elevator alone.
