Agent D.O.Smith, of the Chicago office celled at eleven o'clock this evening and stated that the man whom they had been covering in the apartment house was in reality Verne Miller, and that he had escaped from the officers lying in cait for him. It seems that he came out of the apertnent about nine o'clock this evening, and as he came into view of the officers, Agent Notesteen identified him ae Miller. The agents had the elevator completely covered but instead of taking it he ran down the stairs end out of the apavtment house. He was approached by Agent Nichols and after taking a shot at the latter, he sprang into a car which a voman naned Bobty{‘foore had raiting for him. She immediately drove away. Agent Nichols returned the shot just as Miller vas getting into the car and the bullet went into the car, Police Sergeant Kempster who was covering the entrance with a machine gun turned it on the car, filling it with bullets. Hovever the couple escaped in the car, which however vas found abandoned later about three or four blocks away. The police have broadcasted a description of the couple and every effort is being made to apprehend them, no trace having been found as yet. It is believed that one of the couple may have been rounded as some blood was found in the car.Agent Sith also advised that they have Miller's roman, Vi Miller, in custody and are preparing to question her. I tried to reach you at your home to convey the above in- fornation to you but was unable to reach you there. I then called Ur. Tolson who said he would try to reach you and give it to you.
