' enolosing copies of © letter dated October 5,1933, from Harold E,
Stassen, county ettorney,. Dakota County, Sout »Pa.i,Minnesota,
concerning the}payroll robbery in which VERNON! C.MILLER and GEORGE
\ KELLY were believed to be participants, thie robbery occurred on
August 30,1933, eat which time en armed gang, driving a lerge car,
stole a payroll, killed an officer, and seriously wounded another
_ Guring the robbery. A few deys later, a similar affair occurred
. @t Chicago, Illinois, at which time on officer named CUNNINGHAM
wae Killed, Ballistic experts determined that the same weapon
hed been used in both robberies, There were newspaperea and other .
matters found in the ear, which’ we abandoned et Chicago, indicating
that the ssid car had been used in the South St.Paul robbery,
Two or three witneases at South &t.Peul tentatively iden-
tified MILLER and KELLY ae being participants in thie robbery; how
ever, the identity is not certain, One circumetence, which hea been
kept in the strictest of confidence, which might be of some value in
determining whether KELLY end MILIER participated in the robbery, was
thet during the robbery a clerk in the post office shot at one of the
pendite as the bamiit we leaving the ourbd to enter the eutomobile, —
The shot etruck him above the right hip, aecording to the belief of
the post office olerk,\ The clerk, after shooting e+ the benidit, bea
cams penicky and for several days did not divulge that he had shot
eat the bandit and it wes discovered only after the county attorney,
Mr.Staesen, made @ survey of the premises and noticed that one of the
bullets which hed gone through the lead re-enforced glass of the post —
office had been fired from within, whereas, 811 the other bullets hed
left holes indicating that the shot had been fired from outside, In-
quiry by Mr.Stessen then resulted in locating the post office clerk.
