Sunday and advised that he hed been informed by a confidential .
informant at Hot Springs, arkansas, that Dick“Galatas had: conmunicated
with him and had offered to surrender in the event that it would be ~” Coe
promised to him that he would’ not be turned over to the Missouri authorities vee
for prosecution on the murder charge; that he ie willing to take his chances -
on the obstruction of justice charge. I told Colvin that I did not feel the
Director would entertain any such suggestion, but nevertheless I would . ~
communicate with him. Subsequently, after talking with you, I called Colvin
on Monday and advised him that you would make absolutely no terms with Galates;¥
that if he surrendered he was to surrender without any conditions attaching |
to the same. Orders have been issued that he is to be taken dead.or alive. I”
Subsequently, on Monday, the Sth instant, Colvin called me on the oa
telephone and stated that another approach had been made by Galatas through |
an informant of Agent Chipman; that this time Galatas stipulated that he
would surrender without conditions other than that the surrender be in the -
presence of Chief of Detectives at Little Rock, Arkansas; that this Chief of — .
Detectives would accompany him, together with our Agents, to Kansas City where ~
he was to be placed in Federal custody. I told. Agent Colvin that I felt the
Director would not be opposed te the surrender before the Chief of Detectives
at Little Rock, that is, after I had inquired of Colvin as to the character
of this man. Colvin stated so far as he knew he was dependable. However,’ - $
efter talking the matter over with you, I again called Colvin and told him H
that the Division would make absolutely no terms with Galatas and that it b

would not agree to his surrendering to the Chief of Detectives at Little Rock;
that if he wanted to surrender to us he would have to do so to us alone, — :;
preferably at Kansas Citys; that no harm would come to him if he surrendered, . _
in so far as the Agents were concerned, but that if he did net surrender within -
forty-eight houre we would inaugurate an even more thorough search and would be

that he had contacted an informant by the name of McGuire at Detroit who had
shed some new light on the family history of Galatas. Thie call was previous to
the call from Agent in Charge Colvin. Agent in Charge Larson stated that the
maiden name of Galatas' wife is McFadden; that the wife's mother, Mrs. McFadden,
lived for a time with her daughter and Galatas at Hot Springe but recent.
