During all this interval, officers in cars end on foot and otherwise
continued scouting the vicinity for a radius of a mile or two, Jt =:
wes raining and very fogey. It was at this time practically certain |
that Underhill hed been badly wounded and it was felt that he could -
not proceed very far.» ; my oe cote eit
As above stated, ‘the plood hounds arrived at 6:45 A . Hey ae
and immediately efforts were made to have them pick up the scent,
there having been found a place where he had fallen face downward
: in the mid and also a place where there was a a small spot of blood.
° at this point, the hounds appeared just esbout to start off when a ~
police car rushed up and azhouced that Underhill was in the City ©
Hospital. wo
‘in,
It was later discovered that She rift Stanley Rogers and
several other officers from Oklahqama City, in response to a telephone ~
cell for assistance, had just arrived and were elmost at the point of © _
leaving the Police Station when a motorcycle officersnamed Bill McKenzie |
who was the only officer left on duty at the station, rusbed out and
told Sheriff Rogers that he knew where Underhill was and said, “Letts —
go.” They proceeded to 509 East Main Street, Shawnee, which fe a
second-hand furniture store owned by R. B. Owens, where Underhill was
fougd in bed in a back room almost. unconscious.
It develbped that Owens, the owner of the furniture store, - |
had notified McKenzie of the whereabouts of Underhill, This place
fs some 16 blecks from the scene of the gm fight and everyone of
experience who has seen Underhill since he was shot is unable to —
understand how it was possible for him to have proceeded so far on :
foot. It also developed that Owens-is aleo an ex-convict who served as
time at McAlester with Underhill end thé, erhill evidently knew ot
exactly where he was heeded for when he fle€. It appears, however,
that since Ovens inmediately reported the presence of Underhill in
his house, that there will be no justification of procedure egainst
him. The fact that Underhill was actually taken into custody by
Sheriff Rogers and his fellow officers wudoubtedly led to the Assoc~
fated Press report that he had been captured by police officera,.
Underhill did not attempt to deny Hs identity. He is
in very grave condition, but has talked a great deals He thought he
was dying and under such conditions postively asserted to Agent.
Frank Smith that neither he nor Harvey Bailey had eny thing: to do with -
the Kensas City maasacre. — . ;
