this informant heretofore has not been furnished the Division. His ~
nama is going forward immediately in a confidential letter to the Di-
rector. He can be reeched through Agent R. E. Peterson of the Birming-~
ham Office, who is stationed at hianphis, Tannessee, This informant
stated thet he did not mention the name of Galatas to Lou Connors dur-
ing their .conversgation, but that Lou Connors brought the subject up
several times and said that Galatas was "dam hot" and that the Govern.
ment would probably rather have him than any man for whom it ia now
searching, Informant expressed the opinion that Lou Connors knows his |
whereabouts. Arrangements were made that if this informant obtains
eny information, it will be immediately furnished Agent Peterson.
It will be observed from the report of reference that
the Birmingham Office was requested to ascertain the present whereabouts
of Pat G. Sturney, atep-son of Galatas; that information was obteined
that he is working with the C. W. 4. in Montgomery, Alabama, and re-
siding at the home of Jamas 1. Beach, a conductor on the L & N Rail-
road, residing at #5 Club View Avenue.
The Birmingham Office was again Pequested to obtain
ee mich information as possible relative to Beach, as to his reliability,
whether he could be trusted, et cetera,
Agent H. E. Roberts of the Birmingham Office con-
@ucted inquiry in Birmingham, Atabama; he interviewed Devid W. Bale
lard, colored, carrier 734, who delivers mil at said address, bat
could not learn that Sturney is receiving any mail; in fact, Ballerd
that James L. Beech has a son, Gould ki, Beach, attending the University
of Alabem, et Tuscaloosa, Alabama. agent Roberts had a cover placed
on the mail of Sturney at #5 Club View Avenue in Montgo-ery, Alabama.
agent Roberts interviewed Z. D. Steele, Inspector
of Police, L & N Railroad, Montgomery, Alabama, who stated that Jams
L. Beach is now en extra conductor on the L & N Railroad, and was
formerly a yardnester at Birmingham; that he is a great talker, 1s
unable to keep a secret, and he does not believe that he could be
trusted in a case of this kind, ii. Steele informed Agent Roberts
that John Kelley is the Sergeant of Police on the L & N Railroad,
works out of Flomaton, Alabama, and rasides at Pollard, Aleabems, ang
that Kelley is a brether-in-law of Kr. Beach, and that kelley is abso-
lutely trustworthy, and thet he is confident that he could be relied
upon, and thet he is certain that Kelley would be glad te render any
assistance possible.
On January 27, 1954, agents interviewed Er. % D.
Steele, Inspector of Police, L & N Reilroad. Steele appears alert
and intelligent, and has worked with the Birmingham Office of the
Division, and his reletions with the Division are of the best. He
