Brey interviered Chief of Detectives Ven deVenter of the Joplin, Missouri, edvised thet Herbert Ferner is a close friend of Fred Berker, Herry Cempbell end Glenn fright; that Fermer hrc freguently harbored these individuals et his plece et Joplin; thet Fred Barker vas reised by Farmer's mother and et one tine was employed by Farmer as ea cab driver. - On June 23, 1923, Special Acents A. E. éndersen end 3. R. fllen, thile conducting investigation «t Hot Springs, Arkanses, ex- hitited the photezrephs of Alvin Kerpis and others es suepects in _ thie case to Sem Watt, rho identified Kerpis as being a frequepter vith Hervey Belley at the Belvedere Club. ; et Lfter the epprehension of Herbert Fermer, he wes inter- viexed on July 14, 1973 by Speciel Agent Brentley, at the County - Jeil, Kenses City Missouri, at rhich time he vas questioned con- cerning his knorledge of Fred Barker end admitted thet he was very well acqueinted with him. He advised thet he hed knova Fred Berker end his brothers "Doc" and Herzen, the letter nox dead, ell their live; and that ebout 1920, chile opereting a tari line et Picher, OkIlchoms, he hired Fred Berker as & cab driver. He denied that Berker was releted to him, but steted thet his mother had taken cere of him as a boy. He also stated that Barker has ecquired a bed reputation, end is knom es a "killer"; thet Berker is frequently eccompenied by Alvin Kerpis, and thet the tro of them hed frequently been to his home, re _s ~ Then first questioned concerning Berker, Fermer appeared . to manifest considerable interest and msde the renerk, seeningly to himself, "I vonder if Berker could be essociated rith Verne Miller." It wes epperent to Agent Brantley that he did not went to become knom as a "squeeler" and the inference is thet he was ettempting
