These markings should be of such a character as not to injure the evidence itself. They should be made in such a manner as to preclude the possibility of the marks being obliterated. Their character should be such as to make it possible for the person or persons who obtained the evidence to testify at a later date that this particular article was found at a certain place at a certain time. Each mark should be distinctive; therefore, an Wy! should never be used. Evidence obtained and placed in containers or cellophane envelopes should be appropriately identified. Detailed notes should be made describing the articles found, the place they were found, the date found, and the person who found them and the identifying mark on each. The original notes should be preserved in the investigative file of the case for use by the Agent when he/she is called upon to testify at the trial.
