This source stated that she was a member of the HOLLY./00D CITIZENS CO'MITTSE FOR FEDERAL THEATRE in 1939. This organisation was a pressure Communist group st up to convert the Theatres of the United States into an institution controlled by the Federal Government and to prevent the dissolution of the “PA Fedoral Theatre Project. This project was dissolved by ,ot of Congress beoause of the fact that the Communist Party has gained control of it. SOURCE further informed that Miss HELLMAN was a sponsor of, and active in, the UNITED AMERICAN SPANISH AID COMMOTTES, a Communist front organiza ion ore- . ated to carry out the policy of the Comintern in its relations with the Spanish Civil “ar. This same Sou:ce informed thet she was a sponsor of a protest by the INTERNATIONAL IABOR BEFENSE, a Communist front organisation of many years standing, against the prosecution of EARL BRO DER, TILL IM pECANE IDERUAN, and any opposttion to the Commnist Party. This organization was a Communist effort the purpose of which was to produce. plays carrying out the propaganda line of the Commnist Party, It was affiliated with the AMERICAN PEACE MOBILIZATION and those of this Alliance were extremely active in their opposition to the "imp riolist" war, tho position of the Communist Party at that time. The HOLLYWOOD THEATRE ALLIANCE went out of existence with the change in the Cormunist Party line brought about by tho attcok on Soviet Russin by Hitlr. DAILY NEWS, April 5, 1939. A magozine called "TAC" (Official organ of the THEATRE ARTS COMMITTEE) stctes in the issue of December,1939, pages 16 and 17, that JOHN HOARD La“Sa@! is one of tho leading playwrights in the United Stateg, and his efforts have af- feoted c« host of younger playwrights.
