Informant : 7s atvised reporting agent that this reservation had been made on several prior oa Ce 4 occasions, but had been cancelled inasmuch as HELIMAN had not been able to arrive . 0s in Seattle in time to take the reservation made for here Informant stated that the = . 66 reservations were made for GRACE HELLMAN rather than LILLIAN HELLMAN, and that the “Bg Washington, D. C. representative of Pan American World Airways had indicated that "+ gy the State Department was interested in seeing that the subject was given reservations. 9% She was to travel as a nob-priority passenger. - §} v1 HELLMAN arrived in Seattle at 9:20 P.M. on October 12, 1944 from C1 Los Angeles, California. She was traveling on the Southern Pacific, train 107, ' og _ amd occupted bed room E in car 61, Upon arriving in Seattle, she proceeded to tt the Washington Athletic Club and occupied Room 1906. It was ascertained through “, OF a representative of the sashington Athletic Club that subject was a guest of the Gf elub at the request of JAY C. ALIEN, a noted lecturer. a ‘+? : | . The JAY C. ALLEN above referred to is apparently identical with : os JAY C, (ALLEN, JRe, the son of a Seattle attorney. ALIEW was born in Seattle in -—1 ¢ 1900 and attended highschool in Seattle; later going to Washington State College Pi and Harvard. Since 1924, according to articles appearing in the"Seattle Post zs Intelligencer,"a daily newspaper published in Seattle, “ashingtom, ALLEM has spent __. 2 much time in Europe, He worked for the"Chicago Tribune"for ten years immediately oe after 1924 and is reported to have been with the"Chicago Daily Newe*for a short 0: tine. . - , : 6: He wes reported to have been in the South of Spain when the Civil og War broke out in that country, At that time be joined the staff of the "Chicago Lk Tribune.” An article appearing in the"Seattle Post Intelligencer" on March 2, S: 1938 refers to ALIEN as being “definitely a Loyalist sympathizer." ALIEN is ’: reported to have made the statements that "FRANCO was defeated before Cermany and €. Italy intervened.* . . 2.
