_ The "Daily Worker" issue of March 15, 1951, page 11,
eolumns 2-4, contained an article entitled, "LILLIAN HELLMAN'S
‘Autumn Garden’, A Retreat From A World Of Reality." This
article is critical of the subject's play, stating that she
"did not fail in an attempt to advance," but "failed in a
retreat." According to the article, "The Autumn Garden" reflected
"the great scenes offutility with which the middle class, as a
whole, tends to react to the world crisis of capitalism."
