LILLIAN HELLMAN
_
™,
Lillian Hellman was the subject ef a security-type
investigation and, according to Louis Budens, was considered a
member of the Communist Party. Nellman was reported active
ia Communist Party activities during the late 1930s and continu®d
to be a strong supporter of the Party until 1045. In May, 1952,
she testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities
that she was not a member at that time, but refused to answer ques-
tions relating to her Party activities prior to two years previously
on the grounds her answers might be “self-incriminating.“ Hellman
was active in a number of communist front organizations. (100-28760-57)
