An article in the May 22, 1952, issue of the
"New York Times" reflected that LILLIAN HELLMAN, Stage
and Screen Writer, made an appearance before the House
Un-American Activities Committee on May 21, 1952, She
denied she was a Communist Party (CP) member at the time
she testified before the Comnittee and refused to answer
questions concerning former CP membership.
An article which appeared in the February 15,
1954, issue of the "Daily Worker" reflected that HELLMAN
had been tolling with the idea of presenting a musical
version of Voltaive's satire "Gandtde,"
The CP has been designated by the Attorney
General of the United States pursuant to Executive
Order 10450,
The "Daily Worker" is an East Coast Communist
daily newspaper,
