Reported To Be Relatives of
Racketeer; Special Care
Taken to Guard Secrecy
The Federal Grand Jury impaneled
on Monday for an investigation of
the criminal elements of the nation
and those that harbor them. with
special attention to be centered on a
hunt for Louis (Lepke) Buchalter,
fugitive industriai racketeering
chief, began its activities yesterday
with the hearing of two witnesses.
These were an elderly gray-haired
woman and & portly middle-aged
man whose identities were not made
known but who were reported to
be relatives of the fugitive gangster.
Their examination by Jerome Doyle,
Assistant United States Attorney,
was preceded by a short address to
the jury by Mr. Doyle on the scope
and nature of the government's in-
quiry.
Elaborate precautions have been
taken by John T. Cahill, United
States Attorney directing the govern-
ment's inquiry, to protect witnesses
and guard the secrecy of the inves-
tigation. All witnesses, it was d
covered yesterday, are to be taken
through a basement entrance at the
northeast corner of the Federal
Bullding in Foley Square, and are to
be rushed by special elevator to the
sixth-floor offices of the Federal Bu-
reau of Investigation. A secret corri-
