"Pm Dry cer ast ahd IEW -—— - SUSJECT: Interviews with Capt. ©. J. SKITH ‘ h Stovens, United A — as Lines pilots, who reported secing Ceptein E. J. SMITH was intorviewec e+ 1500, 9 July 1947, concerning the “flying Jisks", and stated substantially as follows; "We left Boise, Idaho, at 2004 Pacific St 2 2015, the co-pilot, Ralph STEVENS, called ny attention to the fs bject seen. We were then in the vicinity of Eumet, our altitude was anp- roximately 6500, and we were climbin= to ou: posec cruising altitude of 8000 from there to Psadleton, Oregon ie heading of the plane at that time was 500 degrees Magnetic North, and the ob? (one) was sighted at eno-rox- 290 decrees, cr ton derrees to su: f Puen iditional four eppeersci to u left of the main, fi bjec These four ppeare ightly smeller than the fi Lje sighted, but all jects avpearad about en they discnveared,. the sene ;lane. I cstimated the altitude of me ww r " hey were within ou: ic} or epproximetely "Shortly after the first group diseppeared, probably one cr two ainutes later, the second group eppeared about 310 degrees, or to the right of the plane. Their altitude was the s-™s as the first GTOupe Throe of the objects eppeared to be on the same plane, and one object appeared slizhtly hizher and to the right of the others. The second group steved within our sight twelve to fifteen minutes, then disappeared. We Lad levelled off by the time the second group disappesred, "The objects were flet on the cose, the top slizhtly rough in contour. The dimensions appeared the some as a DC-2 approximately five miles from use In o@her words, it could have been ninety miles eway if it would be possible for an object as large az that would have to be to be flying, but since we didi't know what we were looking at or how lergs it was, we de- cided that if it were the size of a'DC-3 wing span (90 feet), it was about five miles distent. Actually, we have no iden just how large it was since we could rot tetermine its distance from us. When we first sighted the objects, we decided they were sither going away from us or coming towards us. After a short while, however, we knew they couldn't be coming towards 48, bocause we never approached them. I don't believe they could have beea going a great rate of speed and still stayed in sight for as long as they did. I would judge they might have beon travelling about 200 miles per hour, "Ky personal opinions regarding the objects are - that their Speed varied, was not constent. Whe first sighted, they were going slow and stayed within sight for quite some time. However, when we lost sight of them, they seemed to disappear practically immediatoly. I think they either put on a tremendous burst of speed and disappeared from sight, or else they dissipated. Also, it appeared that only one object, the large one, was controlled, and it in turn controlled the other objects, and I think they were ground controlled.
