“dashington, May 5 - Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, the controversial New York Democratic
congressman, today predicted one of thea worst race riots in history will occur in
Washington unless two chings happen, The riots will occur, he asserted in remarks at
the Shiloh Baptist church, unless: 1. The social factors which produce racial tensions
are removed. 2, Unless the Negro coumunity, “particularly the upper and middle class
group, arouses itself to a new involvement with its less fortunate, economically ex-
ploited and emotionally deprived black brethen."
Powell, who is pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist church in New York, referred to the
fact that Maicols X., the Bo. 2 leader of the Black Muslims, is transferring his activ-

there is no leadership here, and added:
“I warn white America now that the "hate white,’ ‘black nationalists,’ ‘Muslim move-
ment." will rapidly increase unless the white community rapidly makes way for full
equality."..,.
