The "New York Times", local New York City daily
newspaper dated December 21, 1364, contained an article
captioned, "Malcolm Favors a Mau Mau in U.S. -= At Harlem
Rally, He Urges Negroes to 'Even Score'", ‘his article
in part stated that, "Malcom X. the black nationalist leader:,
| declared yesterday that ‘we need a Mau Mau! to win freedom
a and equality for Negroes in the United States.
a “He hailed the Mau Mau -- the antiwhite terrorists
7 active in Kenya before that country gained independence -- as
‘the greatest African freedom fightens,' who would hold an
important place in history.
"He addressed a Harlem rally to support the Mississippi
Freedom Democratic party's challenge to the seating of Mississippi'
all-white Representatives in Congress.
‘three hundred persons, about a third of them white,
attended the rally, in the Williams Institutional Church, at
2225 Seventh Avenue, near 13lst Street.
"Malcolm X accused President Johnson, Vice President-elec
Hubert H. Humphrey and Mayor Wagner of ‘playing the same ga:se
as the Southern crackers.'
‘I'm for anybody who is for freedom, justice and
equality,' he said. ‘I'm against anybody who tells black people
to be nonvivlent while nobody is telling white people to be
nonviolent. !
YIt is necessary to learn the right language to.
communicate with people, he said, adding: 'If the language
is a shotgun, get a shotgun. But don't waste time talicing the
wrong language.
