jliijah Muhammad's recent call
onjthe Negro people to “elect your
own candidates” raises more ques-
tiohs than it answers. But they
are crucial] questions, and it is
good for them to be raised and
discussed widely.
The Muslim leader’s statement
on political action was reported in
the March 18 issue of Muhammad
Speaks, but with only a few di-
rect quotations. It said that Mu-
hammad urged American Negroes
to “seek freedom through unity
and through the judicious use of
the ballot box in the coming elec-
tions.” It also reported him as
saying that “honest and adequate
political representation for the
black people in America was an
essential step towards the winning
of equal justice for the oppressed
and persecuted.”
The only direct quotations at-
tributed to Muhammad were
these:
“There will be no real freedom
for the so-called Negro in Amer-
ica until he elects his own polit-
