Malcolm X, deputy of Mus- Mm leader Elijah Muhammed, said he would arrive in Wash- ington on Thursday or Fri- day. He will initiate a “revi- val-type program” aimed at eliminating “the deteriorating moral condition of our people in Washington.” Mr. XX accused police of breaking into Muslim mosques in Rochester, N. ¥., and Newark, N. J. In Newark, he said, police tried to enter the mosque “on the pretext : that there wa sa bomb in’ there.” Muslims refused to let them in. “You could have had one of the worst race riots in Newark,” he said. “You will have a nasty sit- uation from here on in,” he said, “in any case where po- lice try to break into our sanctuaries. It won't be like in Birmingham, Ala. turn the other cheek. You won't have that with us.” In the 1960 census, Negroes comprised 54 per cent of Washington's population of 765.956.
