Mr. Crimmins poured the first one. I poured the second onc. THE COURT. What amount of rum did you put in? THE WITNESS. It would be difficult, your Honor, to estimate. THE CGURT. Well, by ounces. THE WITNESS. By ounces? | suppose two ounces. THE COURT. I mean, some people pour heavy drinks. * Some pour light drinks. THE WITNESS. Yes. THE COURT. When did you take the last one? . THE WITNESS. f would think about 9 o'clock. The only way } could judge that, your Honor, would be that J ate about 10:00 and it was some time before I} ate. THE COURT. You had nothing alcoholic to drink aiter eating? ‘THE WITNESS. No. f didn’t. TiTE COURT. How much liquor was at this cottage? THE WITNESS. There were several bottles so that J wouldn't be able to tell specifically. THE COURT. Not a large supply? THE WITNESS. I wouldn't be able to tell how much. There was an adequate supply. THE COURT. Was there a sustainsd amount of drinking by the group? THE WITNESS. No, there wasn’t. THE COURT. By any perticular person? THE WITNESS. Not that ] noticed. There wasn't prior to the time f left. Absolutely sober. 7~ Senator Kennedy, what did vou do immediately following yourrelease from the automobile? 1 was swept away by the tide that-was flowing af an_ extraordinary rate throuch rhat narrow cut therefand Was swept along by the tide and ealied Mary Jo's name oat [ was able to make my way to what would be the eat side of that cut, waded upto about my waist and started back to the car. at this time was gasping and belching and coeeh- ing, went back just in froat of the car. Now, the headlishts of that car were still on and § was able to get to what J thought was the front of the car, although it was difficult — and I was able to identify the front of the car from the rear of the car by the Eehts themselves. Otherwise | don't think I would be able so tell. How far were you swept aiong by the current? Approximately 30-40 feet. Did you pess under the bridge? The vehicle went over the bridge on the south side and rested on the south side, and that was the direction the current was flowing, and J was swept } would think to the south or probably east, which would be the easiern shoze of that. ‘ Some 30 feet? J would think 30 to 40 feet. Now, in order to get back to the car was it necessery for ~ you to swim? 1 couldn't swim at that time because of the curzest. I waded into — swam to where | could wade and thon waded along the shore up to where I could go to the front of the ° car and Start diving in an attempt to rescue Mary Jo. ~(K) Was the front of the car facing a westerly directn? I would think it was facine in a northerly direcaon. Well, in rozard to the bridge could you describe we location of the avutomabile with relation te the bridge? Well, your Honor, in the direction of north and saath I with do Gee | seo b can. THE COURT: We don't have any map, do we? MR. TELLER. The bridee runs north and south, fairly close to north and south. THE COURT. That is, coming towards Edgartown woald be north and towards the ocean would be south? MR. TELLER. Yes. sis. MIR, DINGS. Mav we use the chalk, your Honer? THE COURT. Yes. if it is helpful. Would that be helpful, Mr. Kennedy? It may De. J believe there is a board behind you. Assuming the bridge is north and south— es. [Witness draws a sketch on blackboard.) I would bet that that bridge runs more cast—west than north-south. MR. TELLER.
