In connection with a memorandum from tchole to
Mr. Tolson dated 10/19/55 re an attack on the WAACPaby the Attorney
General of Georgia, the Director noted: "Let me have general meno
on WAACP."
Organization, Aims and Membership:
The NAACP was organized in February, 1909, and itncorporated
in the State af New York tn 1911. (61-3176-7)

rights for the Negro by legal and other recognized ethical methods and
Jrequently by vigorous protestation of alleged discritaination.

In 1950, the NAACP clatmed to have 250,000 members with
| chapters tn forty-ftue states. (61-3176597)
Bureau Interest in NAACP:
The Bureau has been recetuing reports re Communtat tafiitration
tnto the WAACP aince 1941. These reports have been submitted by
practically every field office in the Bureau. The reporta reflect that
the CP, through the years, has attempted to infiltrate, dominate and
control the WAACP. The Party has been successful in controlling
tsolated local chapters but has been unable to control the organtzation
on a state or national level.
Position of NAACP re Communisr:
The WAACP at tte 4lat National Convention, held tin Boston,
June, 1950, went on record as opposing Communism and empowered tts board
of dtrectors to revoke the charter of any chapter found to be Communist
